Our narrative starts more than 5,000 years ago, when traders carrying loads of cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, cloves, ginger and pepper made the Maldives an important port of call on their way from Indonesia and India to Arabia. The Maldivians exchanged goods for rice, ceramics, silks, spices, coconuts, sun-dried fish, cordage, cowrie shells and sails made of coconut fiber. These products were transported throughout the archipelago on locally built cargo boats known as "ba theli" in the local tongue, which also served to disseminate information about other places, their cultures and their food. The tale is carried out at Ba theli, where our cooks craft elegant dishes inspired by the epicurean delights of the ancient Spice Routes.
